Activities in Shelter Cove
Lost Coast Recreation Activities
Recreational activities include golf, fishing (charter services), swimming (summer only), surfing and backpacking and hiking trails along the coastline, tidal pool exploration, whale watching (January, February, March).
Northern California offers many fine beaches and wonderful hiking for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. In the town of Shelter Cove there is surfing and affordable golf.
Relaxing and Uncrowded
Because of its relative isolation, Shelter Cove maintains a pristine atmosphere with uncrowded beaches (even in the summer months). During the summer when the weather is hot inland, there tends to be cooling fog along the northern coast. September and October are great months weather-wise with mostly sunshine. Some people find the winter storms wild and exciting. Our vacation house to rent, The Shell House, is a five-minute walk down to the Black Sand beach.
Hiking and Wilderness
To the south of Shelter Cove is the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. Other highlights of Shelter Cove include pristine views, secluded beaches, surfing, salmon fishing, surf and rock fishing, abalone diving, crabbing, whale watching (in January and February), tide pool discoveries, hiking the “Lost Coast Trail” backpacking, 9-hole golf course, boat launch. There is a deli and three restaurants, and a coffee shop. A quiet place to get away from it all!
Nearby, the King Range area is excellent for wildlife and bird watching with a wide a variety of bird species. Accessible habitats stretch for miles from Shelter Cove to the Mattole River Estuary. For more information visit this BLM web site.
